We're chatting with Sunday Skin Nurse Practitioner Caroline Tingquist this evening for our Sunday Sitdown Series.
Sunday Sitdown takes an inside look at all things aesthetics, skincare treatments, and just breaking the stigma around taking care of yourself.
Tell us what you do daily or weekly for wellness? Any tips for someone looking to jump into the skincare or wellness space?
I make an effort to take a walk about five days a week with my pup, Jed. This really allows me time to "reset' and spend some time outdoors, listen to a podcast and ground myself while giving me some clarity. I feel like movement, especially outdoors can be incredibly calming, reinvigorating and helps me tackle my week.
What is your favorite part about your job? Was there something that surprised you about being an aesthetic nurse practitioner?
My favorite part of my job is getting to talk and get to know my patients. In my previous job, I worked from home and realized I loved and missed human connection. I was really surprised at how much additional training and knowledge I would need to acquire to become proficient in my role. Even as someone in the medical field, I had no idea the amount of anatomy and precision this job required to be the best. The positive feeling of helping patients feel their best and getting to know them over a period of time has been super rewarding.
What is something most people do not know about you?
Because my husband has such a grueling and demanding career, it has forced me to really come into my own and understand how self-sufficient I can be. This may include taking care of the yard, managing the household or just taking on tasks that others may default to their significant other. While this is one of the biggest challenges of our marriage, it is also very empowering for myself.
What is a big misconception around aesthetics that you would like to change?
Patients will often come in for a consultation and have a goal or specific look in mind, but ultimately it is my job as the provider to have your best interest, safety, and anatomy in mind when recommending treatments. Sometimes this can look like me recommending something you may have not considered. Aesthetics is not one size fits all. It is a collaboration with your injector, who you should research and trust. While your goals are important and something we always try to achieve, it is my job to recognize what is best for you.
For someone looking to penetrate the aesthetics industry, what is one piece of advice you would give them?
I would recommend just start applying to jobs. You have to start somewhere and this may lead to some closed doors before you ultimately get a yes, but this is the journey. The only way to get in is to start, so understand it may require some sacrifice, but can lead to a big reward.
