Many patients are considering dermal filler to give them a more refreshed appearance, plump the lips or define the jawline.  Learn more about if dermal filler may be a good treatment for you.

What is dermal filler?

Dermal filler is usually a hyaluronic acid based gel substance.  Our bodies naturally make hyaluronic acid and we find it in the eyes, joints and skin. It's excellent at retaining water, making our skin hydrated, supple and plump.  When injected under the skin, it's been found to help improve skin, lines and wrinkles and decrease deep folds. Since it is composed of a substance found naturally occurring in our bodies, it is well accepted by the body and broken down over time.

What areas do we usually treat with filler?

Dermal fillers were originally indicated for the nasolabial folds area (those deeper folds near your nose and mouth).  However, new fillers and better techniques have given us the ability to treat the entire face, including cheeks, chin, jawline and lips!

Am I a good candidate for filler?

People often start to consider filler to address a variety of concerns.  For younger patients in their early to mid 20s, lip filler is commonly a popular appointment.  Lip filler can help plump, define and hydrate the lips.  For patients starting in the late 20s and early 30s, we often start to see signs of aging, including volume lost in the cheeks, potentially the appearance of jowls or maybe a recession of the chin.   Dermal filler can be injected in many areas to give a refreshment of the face, prevent further signs of aging, and give a more defined jawline.

Patients may not be a good candidate for filler if they:

  • are currently being treated for an autoimmune disorder
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have had recent dental work
  • have had recent vaccinations
  • are currently taking antibiotics or blood thinners
  • have an active rash or infection

It is always best to have a consultation with an experienced provider before undergoing a dermal filler treatment. At Sunday Skin, all of our injectors are nurse practitioners with master's degrees, have undergone advanced training in dermal filler techniques and are experienced in injecting dermal filler.

How long does dermal filler last?

Depending on the filler used and where it was injected, dermal fillers can last from 6 months-2 years! Often a maintenance treatment may be needed after one year. Your provider can give you a more individualized timeframe for this, based on your lifestyle.

When injected appropriate, dermal filler can be natural looking and very subtle.  It can rejuvenate and refresh the face while keeping you looking like yourself! Book a consultation today to see if you are a great candidate for dermal filler.
