Laser Hair Removal 101

Everything You Need To Know

Does it hurt, and are there any side effects?

At Sunday Skin, we use the Inmode Diolaze laser which has a cooling plate to help minimize discomfort. Some spots feel a little "spicy", but you shouldn't experience pain. Most people describe the sensation as feeling like a rubber band snapping against the skin, or a warm prickling sensation.

After the procedure, patients may experience mild redness or swelling in the treated area, but these side effects typically resolve within a few hours to a day or two.

How long does it take to see results, and how long do they last?

The results of laser hair removal can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as the thickness and color of the hair, the area being treated, and the individual's skin type.

In general, patients typically start to see a reduction in hair growth after their first treatment, with more noticeable results becoming apparent after a series of treatments. For best results, most providers recommend a series of 6-8 treatments spaced several weeks apart, depending on the individual's needs and goals.

After completing a full series of treatments, many patients experience a significant reduction in hair growth in the treated area, with some patients achieving permanent hair reduction. However, it's important to note that laser hair removal may not completely eliminate all hair in the treated area, and some hair may regrow over time.

Pre-treatment guidelines

Please arrive 5 minutes before your appointment to fill out any necessary paperwork.

To best prepare for your appointment:

Please shave the area 6-12 hours before your appointment.

  • Avoid any tanning type 3-4 weeks prior treatment, or use at least 30 SPF sun block. We cannot laser over an active sunburn.
  • Shave hair 6-12 hours prior to appointment and remove shaved hair.
  • Do not wax or pluck the hair for 4 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Ensure that skin is clean.
  • We cannot perform laser hair removal over any area that has a permanent tattoo.

If you have any additional questions prior to your appointment, please text/call our office at 615-749-6367. If you are running more than 5 minutes late, please notify us.

Post-treatment guidelines

Refrain from:

Sun exposure for 3 days. Please avoid the beach, pool and outdoor activities for 3 days after the procedure.

Tight, restrictive clothing for 24 hours. Opt for loose, airy clothing in the area of treatment.

Humidity, hot, sweaty environments for 24 hours. High moisture, high heat environments will result in a red and inflamed reaction in the area of treatment.

Avoid exercise for 24 hours.

Avoid spray tan or self tanner for 24 hours as this may cause irritation in the area.

Wear SPF 50 or higher for the course of your treatments. In general, it is best to be as light as possible throughout the course of laser hair removal for best results.

Small red “bumps” may be present directly around individual hairs for a few hours after your procedure. This is normal and a sign of a successful treatment. If an itching sensation occurs, apply 1% hydrocortisone or aloe twice daily.

Treated hairs may fall out over a 7-14 period. The hairs may appear to be stunned and will not grow in length as before. Hairs become about 10-15% thinner, lighter, and less dense with each subsequent treatment.
